overnight outage

Our apologies for the difficulties overnight – our monitoring shows it started around 01:30 and lasted about five hours (at which point we had checked mails).

It was due to a power outage at our hosting company; as some of you know, we hold the databases on a separate server, and the interruption in power caused confusion in the internal connectivity to that box.

All is now restored. Our apologies for the disruption in service.

We have received the following information from Merula, our hosting company:

“We are having planned maintenance on our backup generator at our Huntingdon Data Centre on 13th January 2009. While this should not affect any services as with anything there is a very small element of risk while this work is carried out.

Note that mains power will not be interrupted and our UPS systems are still in place though the maintenance”

Server difficulties

We are experiencing some problems today with the database server, which are leading to occasional timeouts when serving pages.

We are investigating this as a matter of urgency, and also expect to be moving the database to another machine this morning.

Server Issues

We apologise for the server problems – there is apparently a routing problem with Merula, our ISP, and they are working on it.

Sadly, this is entirely outside our control, but we are badgering them for a time to resolve.

System Issues

We are experiencing some difficulties today on one server, where a site has suffered the “Slashdot Effect”, and is currently taking literally 25 times its usual traffic.

We are monitoring the situation, but there may be slowdowns until the storm passes.

We have decided to bite the bullet, and move the main server to Huntingdon tonight.

Unfortunately the backup is crashing, and we cannot trust it, so a Friday evening on a bank holiday weekend seems the best time to do this.

A holding page will be up very shortly, so that visitors to your sites will not be presented with missing pages.

Our apologies for this inconvenience.
